Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair in Florida
Heat pumps are the most common heating setup in Florida — and when something starts slipping, it usually shows up on the first cold front. If your system is acting “off,” the goal is to catch it early before it turns into a no-heat night. Here are the most common signs your heat pump needs professional service.
8 Common Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair
1) Your outdoor unit is icing up more than normal
A light frost can be normal, but heavy ice buildup or repeated icing can point to airflow problems, defrost issues, or sensor/control problems.
2) You’re getting weak heat or the house won’t reach set temperature
If it runs constantly but can’t keep up, you may have airflow restrictions, refrigerant performance issues, or a control problem.
3) Your system goes into defrost constantly (or never seems to defrost)
Defrost is supposed to run occasionally and briefly. Too often — or not at all — can lead to poor heating and ice buildup outside.
4) Aux/Emergency heat runs all the time
Aux heat is designed to help during colder moments — not carry the whole load every day. If it’s always on, your heat pump may not be heating efficiently.
5) Breakers are tripping or the system shuts off during heating
Breaker trips can be caused by electrical issues, heat kit problems, failing components, or wiring concerns. Don’t keep resetting breakers — it can make a small issue expensive.
6) Strange sounds (buzzing, grinding, rattling, loud whoosh)
Unusual noises can indicate loose parts, motor issues, failing electrical components, or a reversing valve/control concern.
7) Short cycling (turning on/off repeatedly)
Short cycling can be caused by thermostat issues, airflow restrictions, electrical faults, or system protection lockouts.
8) Burning smell that doesn’t go away
A slight dust smell can be normal on the first heat run of the season. If the smell is strong or continues, shut the system off and call a pro.
What You Can Do Tonight (Before You Call)
-
Check your filter (a clogged filter can cause airflow issues and overheating).
-
Make sure your thermostat is set to “HEAT” (not “EM HEAT” unless you’re instructed).
-
Set the temperature 2–3 degrees above room temp and listen: does the indoor fan run? does the outdoor unit run?
-
Look at the outdoor unit: is it blocked by leaves, fencing, or debris?
-
If a breaker trips again, stop resetting it and call. Repeated resets can cause damage.
When It’s Time to Call a Pro
If you have no heat, repeated icing, breaker trips, or aux heat running nonstop, it’s time for a diagnostic. Catching the issue early can prevent a cold-night breakdown.
